Welcome to the

Adoptive Parent Self Assessment

This Self Assessment has been developed by The Cradle, an 80-year old not-for-profit, licensed adoption agency (www.cradle.org), in partnership with Pro-Change Behavior Systems, Inc., as part of our commitment to creating and sustaining nurturing families.

Many prospective adoptive parents think about the adoption preparation process in terms of forms and paperwork to fill out and meetings to attend. Most do not stop to consider the emotional side of adoption preparation. However, being emotionally ready to be an adoptive parent is essential to your future relationship with your adopted child and ultimately how that child will feel about himself.

This Self Assessment is designed to help you learn more about yourself and your emotional readiness. You will discover:

  • Where you are in your emotional readiness to become an adoptive parent
  • How others have become emotionally ready to be adoptive parents
  • Strategies to help you get there

THE STAGES OF EMOTIONAL READINESS

Adoption is different than parenting a biological child. It involves an additional layer of self-awareness and skills. You have to let go of some ideas of what you thought parenting would be like and embrace other ideas. While exploring adoption, you may experience feelings of frustration, sorrow and confusion. Some of you may feel excited and anxious to begin the adoption journey, but unsure what steps to take.

This Self Assessment will provide you with feedback on your current stage of readiness and the path you can take to become emotionally ready. No matter what stage of readiness you find yourself, you can make progress toward being emotionally ready. This Self Assessment has different sections with information and ideas to help you learn more, no matter where you are.

To begin, please type your User ID (if you already have one) in the box on the right, or create a new User ID if you are new to the site, and proceed with the Self Assessment. After completing the Self Assessment, you can print out the Personal Feedback for your reference as you continue on your adoption journey.

This Self Assessment is based on the Transtheoretical Model of Change, developed from more than 25 years of research, and has been adapted by The Cradle for the adoption experience.
